You may have noticed that the water in the Rochdale Canal running into Castlefield has all but disappeared. It seems that a combination of vandalism and an extremely dry spring and summer are to blame.

Concerns have been raised by local residents about drug use around Castlefield Bowl and the canal footpaths, particularly during evening hours. 

The National Trust have a vision for Castlefield Viaduct and they are working with us to make it happen! The vision is to transform Castlefield viaduct into a free-to-access park and meeting place for people and nature. Imagine a hidden oasis sitting above this busy city. It will be a space that respects the listed structure, celebrates the nature, beauty and history of the viaduct, and fits in with existing plans for the city.

As some of you will know, Carol Middleton announced at our AGM that she is to step down as Chair. At our Trustee meeting last week, I was elected as the new Chair and Lou Pullen was elected as Vice Chair.

During the glorious lockdown weather last summer, we got a lot of visitors in Castlefield, taking advantage of the open spaces to meet with friends. Unfortunately it generated a lot of litter, Gary started doing some litter picking in his free time and in June created Castlefield Litter Pickers to help deal with the issues. We are thrilled to announce that Gary Rumens will join us as a Trustee of Castlefield Forum. Gary has been instrumental in setting up, leading and inspiring the brilliant Castlefield Litter Pickers group and is a natural fit to help in our mission to make sure that Castlefield is a great place in which to live, work and visit.

This is a very uncertain time for all of us and with reports of empty supermarket shelves, social distancing and the need to self-isolate, we know that some of you will be getting anxious about how you will cope.

A new Friends of St John's Gardens group has been formed, with its inaugural AGM to be held on Thursday 30 January, 6.30 pm - 8.00 pm, at the Castlefield Hotel.
